Why I Started the Stay-At-Home Mom Storytelling Club

Tell me about your metamorphosis, moms, as you go through motherhood. I hear you say that you’ve been like a little bee, dutifully collecting pollen from flower to flower, contributing something seemingly small and insignificant to something larger, beyond our scope of comprehension. Day after day. Year after year. And you’re tired. But laundry still matters. You know why? Because, as a poet once said: “ask the flower, the forest, the earth for its heroes, and they will sing of little wings.”
That’s why.
I hear you say you’ve been doing this for so long, moms, that you’ve lost your sense of purpose, your identity. You can’t only be that honey bee, can you? I feel the same. Our children have grown, and we are ready to re-enter this world as someone new, but who? We were a lawyer, a doctor, a financial analyst in the past; yet, today, we are many things born of motherhood: a nurse, an entertainer, a chauffeur, an educator, an event planner–but not truly any of them. So who are we? This loss of identity makes us an endangered species. Not that we’ll vanish, but we might never re-emerge as our true selves, unless …
Well, here is the thing–this stage in our lives is also exciting! We will unfold from this metamorphosis as reinvented, reimagined, better selves. Because once we figure it out, with our rich life experiences, honed multi-tasking capabilities, and creativity, we will know exactly who we are and what we want!
And to help us get there—ta-daaa—I just kicked off a weekly Storytelling Club! I’ve gathered many of my stay-at-home mom friends from the hood to share stories about our experiences, worries, joys, and sweet everyday moments. Inspired by the idea behind Mathew Dick’s homework for life, we’ll bring storytelling to life to support and entertain ourselves through our journey.
Why Storytelling
- Connect: We form the strongest bonds when we share personal stories. As Matthew Dicks, said, “Nothing can bring a team closer together and build more trust than a story.” And what a powerhouse is a team of moms!
- Have fun: Who doesn’t like hearing a good story they can relate to and have a good laugh about?
- Spice up our lives: Our days at home, tending to children and housework, have blurred into years. The club breaks this monotony.
What unites us is that we are all stay-at-home moms, some of us with part-time jobs, and all with kids of similar ages. We are navigating the same life stage, but with unique experiences–which deeply enriches our conversations.

Topics Covered Today
-Transitional periods in motherhood
-Cultural differences (We have moms from Japan, the US, Ukraine, Russia, Canada, and more)
-Identity crisis and reinvention

And so much more …
But most importantly, we all shared a good laugh with a cup of coffee on a gloomy, snowy Tuesday morning.
Cheers!
